Background Information

• A progressive degenerative disorder of the wrist characterised by loss of blood supply to the lunate which may occur spontaneously over time or following pathology including previous fracture.

Investigation Guidelines

• Investigations are not required prior to referral but are typically the basis of the initial diagnosis.

Management Recommendations

• Early referral is recommended for XR’s suggestive of Kienbocks diease as early treatment can alter the natural history of the disease.
• Referral indications: Diagnostic uncertainty, investigations suggestive of Kienbocks disease.
